FAQ
Frequently asked questions.
The Terminal is designed to be simple, but the rules are specific. Start here.
Getting Started
What video formats are supported?
The Terminal supports MP4, MOV, M4V, and MKV files. If a file plays in QuickTime or a standard Mac media player, it will generally work here as well.
How do I add my own videos?
- Add a media folder in Settings and point it to the location of your files.
- Tag the content in the Library tab with show names, content type, and metadata.
- Assign that content to one or more channels and time blocks.
Do I need to organize my files in a specific folder structure?
No. Your folder structure is irrelevant to the scheduler. The Terminal relies on tagging and channel assignment, not directory layout.
How much content do I need to get started?
There is no minimum. Even a single series will work. The experience simply becomes more convincing as the library grows across multiple channels.
Can I use content from an external or network drive?
Yes. Any mounted volume can be used, including external drives and network shares. The app stores secure bookmarks so access persists across relaunches.
How It Works
Why does a show start in the middle when I tune to a channel?
That is intentional. Channels are always running against a virtual clock, so tuning in means joining whatever is already in progress rather than resuming a personal playback position.
Why can’t I pause or rewind?
The Terminal simulates broadcast television rather than on-demand playback. You can mute, skip forward, or change channels, but the channel itself keeps moving.
How do channels decide what to play?
- Time blocks determine what is eligible during different parts of the day.
- Show rotation prevents the same series from repeating back-to-back.
- Series continuity keeps a show on for 2–4 episodes before switching away.
- Episode tracking remembers progression or shuffle state by series.
What are the short clips between episodes?
Any clip under roughly two minutes can be treated as a short. These are inserted between programs to create pacing similar to bumpers, breaks, and station filler.
Can I control the order episodes play in?
Yes. Each show can run sequentially in filename order or randomly, with all episodes cycling before a repeat. This is configured per show and per channel.
Channels & Content
What’s the difference between local channels and community channels?
Local channels use your own files. Community channels use curated online sources and downloadable channel packs. Both use the same scheduling model, but community channels require an internet connection.
What are Channel Packs?
Channel Packs are curated bundles of online programming assembled around a theme. Install one and it appears as a ready-to-run channel without manual scheduling.
Can I put the same show on multiple channels?
Yes. A show can appear on as many channels as you want, with different time-block rules for each one.
How do time blocks work?
The day is divided into Morning, Afternoon, Evening, and Late Night. Content is only eligible during the blocks you assign to it, and the scheduler picks from that pool.
Why is my channel empty or showing “No Signal”?
- Confirm the media folder is added.
- Confirm the files are tagged in the Library tab.
- Confirm they are assigned to a channel and to the currently active time block.
Playback & Licensing
How do I watch on my TV?
Use AirPlay from the playback window to send the signal to Apple TV or another compatible display. Changing channels on the Mac updates the AirPlay stream without reconnecting.
Can I control it from the couch?
Yes. The Terminal supports remote control workflows, including paired Bluetooth remotes and keyboard shortcuts for core functions like channel up/down, mute, and skip.
What’s included in the free version?
The free mode includes the full scheduling and playback experience with a limited number of usable channels so you can evaluate the system before buying a license.
What do I get with a license?
A license unlocks the full channel range and removes the free-mode channel limit.
Is it a subscription or a one-time purchase?
Check the Downloads page for current pricing and licensing details.
Troubleshooting
My videos aren’t playing and the channel shows “No Signal.”
- Make sure the files are tagged and assigned to at least one channel.
- Make sure the media folder is still connected and accessible.
- Make sure the file format is supported.
The app keeps skipping a specific file.
If a file repeatedly fails to play, it may have been added to the skip list. Review that file in the Library tab and clear the skip state if needed.
Episodes are playing out of order.
Make sure the show is set to Sequential instead of Random, and confirm the files use consistent numbering such as Episode_01, Episode_02, and so on.
A channel resumes where I left off instead of continuing forward.
That behavior was corrected in newer builds. If you still see it, install the latest version from the Downloads page.
